MOT advise!

Sorry if this is the wrong forum!

My temperature light is on, on my dashboard & my MOT is due end of this month.

I've been told by the MOT place i go to that i need to get it sorted before the MOT otherwise it will fail. I've spoke to a friend whose partner has a diagnostics machine but he's said he wouldn't be able to turn the light off so i would need to take it to a specialist. The pain is the lights been on for over a month so it can't be overheating? It comes on as soon as i turn the car on and stays on for about 10 minutes so i think it may be faulty.

I have a Mercedes A Class,

Also is it correct that you can't fail an MOT for not having a spare tyre, but you can if you have a spare and it's punctured/worn?

If my car fails an MOT before the date it's due for one, can i still drive the car?

Should i take my car to a Mercedes garage? :( ££££££.

You can't fail an MoT for no spare tyre.

You can drive a car, if it fails an MoT, if the previous one has not expired.

I'm surprised that a warning light advising you of a 'fault' that isn't part of the MoT (overheating) is a fail but if your MoT station says it is....

They've said when they do the engine checks they won't be able to do them properly incase the car overheats apparently! :(

Ah, arse covering:). You can't really blame them. If it blew up on them and you said 'the warning light was on' they'd be in a bit of bother.

    Having said that.

The temperature guage in my Land Rover reads whatever it pleases. No one has ever refused to MoT it.

Im sorry, but this is going to be expensive..... Double that expensive if you go to a Merc garage. My buddy was quoted over £2000 to diagnose his engine management light problem on his C320 Coupe.
With some other repairs the bill was to be over £3000

Worked out to around £900 total independently, but he refused to go anywhere but Merc (fool and his money are easily parted). In the end he didn't get it fixed and just got rid of it.

I'm looking to get rid of the car in Feb when my insurance is due for renewal.
I can get someone to diagnose it for me for free (luckily as been quoted hundreds in past without any parts of labour) it's just the problem with getting the light switched off.

Maybe i'll try phoning another MOT garage to get their view but been going to this one for 5 years so trust them.

Does the temperature gauge read correctly? If so try another MOT centre and explain that the temp warning light has been like that for months and that the car doesn't over heat. If you have a working gauge it shouldnt be a problem.

Can you not sign a bit of paper saying its not their fault if it overheats? If you want it sorted, go to an independent merc specialist. They'll probably know what they're doing more than Merc will and will charge less of a fortune.

Also, unscrupulous car dealers often disable such lights in some way (remove bulb/fuse/cover it up subtly) to sell them. Maybe you could do this and go to another MOT place?
  • Oh dear me, a warning light comes on and we take no notice of it?

Still, not to worry about that then is there, it obviously means nothing to OP.

Of course it means something to me - otherwise i wouldn't have posted ;)

There is no noticable difference when driving, and if it had overheated more than a month ago i'm certain driving would have been affected.
