Message to others who claim DLA

Recently diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis but suffered with it for years. Applied for DLA a few months back but keep getting letters saying they are still processing my claim. How long did you have to wait for a response?

    First time- 3 months.
    Second time- 3 weeks.

According to father-in-law there is currently a backlog, so it's taking a lot longer than normal (he phoned up twice chasing his).

I suspect that this depends on which area you are in. I have just had a 1st time claim (for a child) processed inside 4 weeks. I was told by the lady who helped me with the form that 11-12 weeks was usual.

I kept getting the same letter, applied March 17 and by July no word. I phoned and asked if they had recieved everything tehy needed and it turned out that my they were witing on my doctors report. Doctor said they sent it, DLA said they never got it. In the end the DLA faxed a copy to my doctor and she filled it in right away and faxed it back. I recieved word then in about 1 week.

It may be worth asking them if there is anything holding it up or are they jsut backlogged.

Known it take 10 months but that was an extreme one, most between 3 and 6 months that I have known of.

My first time was 4 months. My second time was only 3 weeks and my third was 2 weeks. The first period was for 3 years but the second and third were for 2 years. No idea how they make the decision about length of payment.

  • Ive been waiting 11 weeks for a reconsideration. Currently receiving HR care and low mobility but on GP's advice asked to be considered for HR mobility. Sent in tons of evidence and no further medical information has been requested. Hopefully I will find out soon.
