First of all, find where your music is (which folder) on your laptop. e.g. C:\My Documents\My Music.

Next, using itunes, click the 'File' tab at the top left of the screen, and click 'import file' or 'import folder'. Simply select the folder of your music and import.

Another method is to drag and drop the files (using Windows Explorer) from your music folder to itunes.

iTunes is an Apple application which you'll need to download and install. It comes with loads of other bloatware and will hijack all your existing media file associations.

IMO it's a pile of doggy doo but lots of people like it. Either way if you've got an iPod you don't have a lot of choice as the great god Jobs deems that you do it so.
  • Media Monkey allows you to sync to an ipod - might be worth a try.

let's tackle the obvious -have you downloaded and installed iTunes on your PC?

When you Sync an iPod, the content of your iTunes library is transferred to the iPod, so unless you've actually got some content in iTunes, there won't be anything to Sync.

If you have existing mp3s that you want in iTunes, as #2 above says, locate where they are and import the folder containing them to iTunes. You don't need to know where the iTunes folder is to do this. I'd recommend that all your mp3s have tags set with Artist, Album, Track Name, possibly also Track Number BEFORE you import them - if they have no tags, you'll just end up with a disorganised mess and have to re-tag them within iTunes

Be very careful with syncing. When you click 'sync' it syncs the ipod with the library on your PC, not the other way around. This seemingly small difference can lead to big problems. i.e. if you have songs on your PC that are not on your ipod then they are automatically copied to your ipod. Great huh? Yes, but unfortunately, the opposite is true; if you have any songs on your ipod that are not on your PC they are automatically deleted!!
I found this out the hard way when I first got my ipod around 7 years ago, and lost the 20gb of songs that it had taken me weeks to put on it (it was usb1 in those days) :(
I do everything manually now :)

The other downside of syncing, is the fact that it wastes a lot of HDD space. If you have a huge HDD then it's not a problem, but I have a 60gb ipod (which is full) and only an 80gb HDD on my PC, so I could not use sync even if I wanted to.
