I am planning to switch my citibank current account to First Direct and take advantage of the free £100 offer(one requirement of it is to have DD in the old account). However, the citibank account I want to close to is inactive and has no direct debits on it. I once tried to hook it up with Paypal, but paypal was unable to setup a DD stating citi don't accept electronic DD orders(?)
I was wondering how can I setup a dummy(free) DD. All my DDs are in my primary lloyds account (mobile contract & paypal) and don't want to switch any of them unless I really have to.

Almost all direct debits are set up electronically now. You will have difficulty finding one that isn't.0

You can't set up a DD yourself - the company it is in favour of has to do it.
Something like the RT offer sounds best - you might find something else that you would prefer to squander your £1 on - Lonely Planet travel magazine sometimes have such an offer for example
You might find somewhere offering say 3 months free membership with the DD coming into effect at the end of that time - so free. But there's a danger they might not set up the DD until it's due.0 -
As far as I know, you don't have to switch to get the £100 joining bonus, you only have to switch your income.
You do have to switch to get the £100 leaving bonus. You also have to close all accounts, within 12 months, which is out if you're after the 8% Regular Saver.
If you sign up to Zopa as a lender, you can set up a Direct Debit to suck in funds. No money needs to be moved anywhere."It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis0 -
The last time I remember this coming up, people suggested milkandmore.co.uk
How about National lottery? You get £4 back on tcb for £5 deposit by card, and then you can set up your direct debit...Enjoy the silence...0 -

Open a Tesco Instant Access Saver (I think Internet Saver does that too).
Allows you to set up a Direct Debit (yes Direct Debit, not Standing Order) to pull funds from your nominated current account into your Tesco Saver.0 -
Thanks for all the suggestions. As a thrifty mse, I am thinking of making some money on cashbacks while signing up for DD. Looking out for any good magazine deals, otherwise zopa and 1899 are backups. (milkandmore don't deliver in my area)0

1. If you have a credit card, you can set up a direct debit to clear your balance.
2. You can also set up direct debit with Scottishwidows online saver if you have one.0 -
How about setting up a standing order from your City account to your Lloyds account0
