It would be interesting to know how much(per property) the council are paying for the installation, as well as the actual savings made on the bills for each property.

I would hope the council have negotiated a good price for a batch of these devices; also the tenants will be able to give an unbiased appraisal of savings made.

I will try and find out how much it costs but as severel hundered properties will be having the system installed I would imagine this brought the costs down considerably. I will post if I find out.
We were given an information sheet as a basis to decide from and the savings against current fuels used is supposed to be quite alot....I guess I will have to wait and see!!
Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!
:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!

Any chance of posting some data from that information sheet?

Without doubt these systems work, the $64,000 question for most people is will the savings justify the expenditure of installing the system.
However as the Council are presumably paying for the installation, you would not appear to have anything to lose?

I would lose if it turned out to be more expensive to run.lol.
I will have a root around for the info sheet, it was several months ago that we had to register interest, I presume they could negotiate a better price of they had a ball park figure of those who would want to go ahead.
I'll post if I find it then I can email a copy to those interested.

What I meant by nothing to lose is that you can revert to your previous arrangement?

The current set up is a solid fuel fire which heats radiators....this will all be removed to put the new system in and the chimney permanently blocked. So the new system or electric heaters will be the future choices.
So no more collecting free driftwood off the beach to burn, lol

Been looking at this for a while and this website
    http://www.iceenergy.co.uk/ground.asp
    has some good info.
I'm sure I saw a cost of £8000 on one site, but I'm blowed if I can find it again now.

I'm trying to get a quote off Iceenergy at the moment, but they seem pretty slow. A guy at work who is pretty well up on alternative energy stuff said the goign price was around £10k, but if I ever get a quote I'll let you know what it is.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • A friend of mine works as some energy efficiency advisor for Npower, she was raving about this system when we asked her views on changing from Gas heating to something else.
Very high start up costs (as pboae says about 10 grand), but should save you thousands in the long run.
Her workers have got access to a deal and they're really going for it (where land space allows to install the system).
Not often an utility company worker recommends you steer clear of gas..

With a system costing £10,000 you will be paying £600 per year in interest if your borrow the money at 6%.

Whilst you will make some savings, you will be highly unlikely to save £50 a month off your heating bill - or anything like it - even before you start to pay back the 10 grand capital.

The cost of producing heat by these pumps is roughly the same as Gas CH.
With a good system you will get back 4kW of heat for 1kW input. So if electricity costs 10p/kWh you will be paying an effective 2.5p/kWh which is roughly the cost of gas.

Just a quick update....the bore hole is being drilled as I type, it is 85m in depth. I have heard that the system would cost somewhere around £18000 to a private househole. As the landlord, the local council is getting a "job lot" of these systems they have got it cheaper.
Will keep posting as things get done.
