Hi,

I can send and receive emails on two accounts (tiscali & toucansurf) when I use my laptop at my place or my parents. However, when I use my laptop at my sisters (BT Broadband) I can receive emails but get the above error code for sending emails. My dad also has the same problem on his laptop. I've now tried using my laptop at my friends (freeserve) and get exactly the same syptoms. Below is the full error message.

Task '**********@tiscali.co.uk - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

From what I have been able to find out I believe this is due to my friends ISP and my sisters ISP preventing me sending emails from my accounts - different ISP's in case they are generating spam. If this is the case does anybody know how I can overcome this problem?

PS - I always connect wirelessly, but doubt that this has any significance to the problem.

Many thanks,
RH.

  • Yes, the problem is for the reason you describe - the ISP you are connecting to will not accept the mail - the mail server is only configured for receiving mail generated from within their network. You can use the web-mail interface on tiscali (now Opal) to send emails from your account, but it's not as simple as just pressing "reply".

I've got a similar problem in that I have an email address at Nildram (which is now part of Opal, as is Tiscali and Pipex) but am normally connected to my Zen internet account. I did discover that there seemed to be a mechanism for connecting to the Pipex mail system (a mail server you could connect to from outside their network) so it would all work. I was looking at this a couple of months ago when they were busy merging all the systems together, and I couldn't get it to work with my Nildram setup - but it may be sorted now, so I might look into it again. If I can find anything I'll post back here.

BTW, if that really is your email address in your original post, I'd edit it out if I were you.

Spammers use webcrawlers that search for any word on any website with an @ sign in it, so your incoming spam rate will probably increase if you don't.
  • Is there any way my sister or friend can add me as a kind of safe sender?

  • It's not her ISP it's yours, the only way you can send out emails are if you are on your own ISP(at home or another Tiscali connected router) using (Outlook/Thunderbird etc) or use Webmail at their home via Internet Explorer or Firefox or browser of your choice.

Not sure about this. Reason for this doubt is I have 2 email accounts, Tiscali & Toucansurf and they both send & receive from either. It's only when I go to another e.g. BTBroadband that the problems start. Both accounts receive emails but neither will send. From speaking to people in work, the general thought is that some ISP's have higher security standards than others. They seem to think that BTBroadband allow some other ISP's to send email via them if certain security authentication is in place. All a little above me hence this post! Question is, if they are correct, do I need to chase my ISP's to provide authentication or can somebody else add me to their ISP as a trusted visitor? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Are you and/or your parents with Talk Talk?

Reason being, I'm pretty sure without checking ,that Pipex and Toucan come under the Talk Talk umbrella, and so might allow emails to be sent.
    Move along, nothing to see.

No. Parents are with Tiscali. I'm with Toucansurf but also have an old email address from my parents Tiscali account. Sister is with BT.

As I understand it, ISP's don't concern themselves over traffic to another ISP's mail servers. But ISP's are concerned to ensure that outbound mail is not sent through their servers from 'foreign' networks - to eliminate spam - or rather to avoid their servers being seen as the source.

To add to the confusion, the message you are recieving originates from your email program, not from the ISP's - once you understand that, I think the message does in fact bear out what I am saying - that the mail servers are dropping the connection, once they work out that your IP address is on a 'foreign' network.
