  • Just an update to bring closure to the thread;

    I sold my motherboard, CPU, 3gb ddr2 ram and 32bit windows 7 OEM version.

    with the money bought the following;
    MSI 880gm-e41 (Ebuyer £48), Phenom x2 555 (Ebuyer £69), Crucial 4gb ddr3 (Play £34) and a Corsair Nova V 32Gb SSD (Amazon £60) Window 7 Pro 64bit (S4S £39)

    Built the system, SSD for OS and 500GB hard drive for data and games, with the SSD put C:\Users and pagefile.sys on to 500gb Hard drive and turn off hiberfil.sys to give more space on the drive for apps. One thing I had to do was get the latest Sata drivers from AMD as these are the only ones that give performance and support TRIM.

    They only bad point to the build, I couldn't unlock the other cores of the 555, in BIOS they unlocked but were not stable to boot into windows, this was the same whatever Vcore/Vcore-nb voltages I threw at it. But not to worry the 555 is an overclock beast at present up to 3.65ghz on air, stable, could go higher but its a small gaming cube case so heat is a problem.

    Thanx to all for help and advice.

    Ebay the cpu -with receipts, the usual ebay spiel etc. and shout about warranty, buy another. My 1st e5200 needed a lot of volts ,2nd one did nearly 4.5ghz and is sat at 3.75 daily use 1 yr+ now.

    Thanx for the tip, as the main reason for the upgrade was to go to a quad CPU, me thinks I will sell it on Ebay and just buy a 955, I took a chance with a 555, would be very miffed if I spent money on a 555 for it not to unlock again.

    Hopefully get one on payday just before the VAT increase on the 4th Jan or if I spot a deal on Hotukdeals before then, the credit card takes a hit. :D

    Very happy made the jump to an SSD, boot times are amazing 30 sec (15 sec after BIOS finishes)
