Hi Guys

Hoping someone can help me as im in a bit of a tizz!!
Basically, my laptop has been broken and ive claimed through the insurance for a new one. Theyre happy to pay out so all is good but here is my dilemma.

I had a Sony Vaio VGN NS21N and the insurance company are stating that they are looking to replace this with a Samsung R530 JA0D which is currently retailing for £439.99 in Comet.

I have stated that i dont want a Samsung - i want it replacing with a Sony Vaio of similar spec. Im waiting the decision from the insurance company.

Basically theyve told me that Sony/Samsung/Toshiba and HP are all in the same "bracket" if you will and thats why theyve chosen the Samsung as the best match to my old laptop.

Any ideas of which Sony might match this spec? Also, would i be better taking the Samsung?

Never had a Samsung laptop before so am really just looking for some opinions.

Thanks in advance

  • Not sure on Samsungs etc but the insurance may just give you a Comet voucher for the value and you can then pick whatever you want.

Yes, theyve said about a Comet voucher. Thing is, i dont really want to be restricted to just Comet!!!! Theyve said gather some evidence together of what you want and we'll look into it but i dont know where to start!!

Sticking to the range currently available at Comet, if they'll stretch to I would suggest you consider the following:

    Asus X52F-EX486V

    HP G72-102

Although only a fairly average laptop your Sony has a Core 2 Duo T6400 cpu with a benchmark of 1335. The Samsung they offered has a cpu that benchmarks at 1429 so slightly better. The two I listed above both feature the Core i3 processor, actually the i3-370M and i3-330M respectively which benchmark at 2147 and 1960 so kick the older generation processors into touch.

Both laptops are in the online store at £399.99

I would personally stear clear of the G72-102. Thats the laptop I currently have and I have exp nothing but problems with it. It does not power up at the first attempt and this is a common problem according to HP altho there has been no offer to repair it!

Is your laptop still under warranty? Can you not make the case that because of a known inherent hardware fault it's not fit for purpose and should therefore be exchanged or refunded.

    Some advice here

If I am honest, I am a bit of a flake when it comes to this type of thing. I dont even understand the excess on my home ins haha.

But thanks a bunch for that, I will certainly be on the phone to HP tonight when I get home and we shall sort this out. :T
