So I just got a Wii...

Options
Cmas pressie for the family that includes a 6 and 4 year old.

I need some questions answered please.

Extra remotes: I should be going for remote plus, yes? Those include motion plus built in?

What extras are good to have? Steering wheel? Sports Pack? Proper gaming controller? Wii fit balance board was part of the bundle - any accessories recommended for that?

Is it worth paying extra for the Nintendo branded products? Is buying the "compatible with" products a false economy?

And are there any games you can recommend that will keep us all amused?

The last console we bought for this sort of play was Playstation in 1999 - so if you can explain why I'll need Wii points that would be good - also someone said I can watch iplayer on it - we have wireless broadband in the house, so can the wii connect to that or do we need an adapter? Is there anything else that you think I should know about the Wii and haven't asked about?

Thank you

  • Hi there,

    > Yes go for motion plus. Not sure if too many games require it but at least you're future proofing yourself
    > Steering wheel good for mario kart etc
    > get a rubberised skin for the balance board, a lot let slippy and comes in a variety of lovely colours!
    > I'd personally go for nintendo branded stuff, better build quality imho
    > games wise - mario kart (1-4 players), mario bros wii (1-4 players) - first two that came into my head but we like playing them!
    > wii points are for buying/downloading games from the wii store
    > wifi is built in to the wii so no adapter needed. you download the iplayer bit from the wii store, it then appears on the main screen

    hope this helps!

    :)

dont buy the sport accessory pack its kind of pointless

you just get a 6 inch long golf club to stick on the end of the controller which make no difference same with the tennis racket add ons.

also if you get a none genuine steeringwheel it doesnt have a hole in it so you have to take the remote out each time you want to move your hand on the screen. (well the one i have doesnt have a hole)

save the money and get a game

get Wii Party, it is a good family game and comes with an extra wiimote. Boom Blox is another game worth getting.

there are two games where you get a free Wii remote - Wii Play & Wii Party, neither of them are the greatest games in the world, but considering the general cost of remotes (£33) and the low price of those games (£35) well, you see the point! You will likely need more nunchucks as well - although there are "third party" remotes/nunchucks out there i'd be wary, besides the fact they generally won't fit inside the "accessories" (Mario Kart wheel for instance) they are 100% unlicensed to the stage where i know at one point Nintendo were looking towards suing the companies involved - i'd expect them to look to follow Sony's example and "break" them through software updates.

As for the sports packs, they help some but for the most part, cheap & unnecessary (clearly i need Wii Spelling!)

  • the rabbids tv party has a variety of games, and is 'fun' for all the family :)

  • Try poundland for the remote add ons, they work ok and are a lot cheaper, remember if you have wireless internet to connect the wii, you can then get bbc iplayer, the internet channel, and can make sure you have the updates for the wii, if you know anybody else with a wii, see if they have animal crossing, this game is not the best, but for children it means they can visit each other, they seem to like it.

I agree pretty much with everyone above.

There's 2 of us in our house so we have 2 wiimotes and 2 nunchucks.

Mario kart came with the wheel, but we don't use it all that much so I wouldn't bother with a 2nd one.

Mario Kart is the best game on the wii ever!

Everything else has already been said so I won't repeat any more!

    Right - chargers.

Have seen loads of remote chargers/wii stands (chargers?)

Lady in Game said that using normal rechargeable batteries reduces the life of the controllers. Is that true? Should I buy rechargeable battery packs for the controllers and balance board? Or should I stock up on 10 AAs from Ikea for £1.99?

  • i cant imagine using rechargable batteries would reduce the life of the controller

what do you think are in the rechargable packs lol sounds like some pikeey GAME selling techinque

i would have walked out at that point and gone to gamestation
