Legal cover as part of motor insurance - worth it or just a con ?

I reckon it is a con. They charge you around £25 and in my experience (though only once) they were as much good as a chocolate fireguard and simply did not want to step in.

With all manner of no win no claim lawyers out there these days just what service do they provide ?

If you've caught the guy who damaged you in any way, then you have him. If you don't know who it was, then they aren't going to help find him are they ?

I just don't see where they can be of use nowadays.

Going through the insurance conundrums for a prospective car purchase !

Only time i needed them many years ago they were useless, They sent one letter to the driver who damaged my car, He didntrespond and they told me it was a waste of time and effort.

Dont bother, Lots of no win no fee companies out there eager for your business. Enough information freely available on the net to do most of it yourself.

My thoughts exactly in this century. I had a similar experience to you way back in the 1990s, before the net etc.

I used legal cover to successfully sue for an uninsured loss. It was well worth the premium.

If You have more than one car it can be cheaper to buy separate cover though. The RAC do it for £15 IIRC.
