Possible carbon monoxide from new gas fire

Hi

I have a feeling that my gas fire bought from Argos in Feb 10 is leaking carbon monoxide.

It is an open living flame type fire and it was fine up until a couple of weeks ago when the light grey coloured pebbles on it started to get stained by black soot deposits and the flames appeared to be burning more yellowy coloured than usual.

I googled this and it came up with carbon monoxide problems!

Anyway, I haven't used it since.

I'm wondering if the recent high winds have blown a load of leaves off nearby trees into the chimney and blocked it.

However, does that mean I need to pay a gas person to test the fire first then a chimney sweep to clean the chimney. Or would a chimney sweep be able to clean it and then test it afterwards?

The fire was installed by a corgi reg gas fitter.

Or is this all coincidence with the high winds, could it be that the fire is faulty, in which case do I contact Argos or would I have to pay someone to check the fire and then contact Argos?

Trying to be safe but cost effective.

Thank you.

You really should have a carbon monoxide detector in your house anyway, it could save your life! You can get some combinded with smoke alarms but they also sell much cheaper strip ones that are effective too.

I would try contacting Corgi first and asking them if they will come back out to check it, they might offer it free but not sure.

I hope he was GasSafe rather than CORGI but never mind get him back to look at it.

Did you pay him to fit it? If so its nothing to do with ARGOS unless its faulty. You don't say when it was installed but it should be still under the fitters workmanship warranty if only purchased in February.

    Cheers

hi yes, i paid 120.00 to have old fire and surround taken out and new one put in.

i also noticed i have a carbon monoxide alarm on the wall and the test button is working but it hasnt gone off whilst using the fire, unless they only go off if the levels get quite high, i'm not sure.

i will take your advice and ring the fire installer.
  • It's more likely a problem with the flue, rather than the fire

The installer should have done a spillage test after installing, and should have checked the flue for adequate size and sufficient draw before installing.

Let the installer check it and see where the problem lays - either with the install or is something has changed afterwards. Obviously, if the initial install was not adequate, you don't expect to be charged
  • How old is your carbon monoide alarm? The element that senses carbon monoxide only works for 5/6 years so if it is older than this then it won't work. The test button is only testing the batteries/power suppy.

As for the cheaper strip ones, there not much use if you are asleep are they and then it will be too late.
