Hi
I've a Dell laptop and OH a Compaq laptop.
Given our recent computer problems we thought it best to buy an external hard drive for backing up files.
Can anyone recommend one please.
Also if more information is needed, please ask, although we're a bit clueless so our answers might not be great.
Thanks.

I swear by western digital HDD but I have heard of some breaking though they are not more likely to break than any other brand, also seagate is as good aswell.
of which the WD 1TB one is very good (I have it myself) also pc world is cheepest. £50 considering the 500GB drive is £45 going for the 1TB is a good choice.
I would say that if you have very very inportant data (say important family photos) then I use 2 external HDD, but if you are going to keep a copy on the respective computers AND a 2nd copy on the external hard drive then 2 drives will likely not be needed as it is unlikely that both the computer will go wrong and the external HDD break at the same time.0 -
Instead of 2 external hard drives, I'd recommend 1 external hard drive and also using an online backup service like Mozy or Carbonite. They are relatively cheap and automatically do backups in the background (if you have a lot of data to back up, this will eat into your data allowance with your ISP - be careful).I would say that if you have very very inportant data (say important family photos) then I use 2 external HDD, but if you are going to keep a copy on the respective computers AND a 2nd copy on the external hard drive then 2 drives will likely not be needed as it is unlikely that both the computer will go wrong and the external HDD break at the same time.
If you have a small number of very very important files, Mozy do a free 2G backup service - http://mozy.com/home/free/0 -
