Fencing woes

    I've been Money Tipped!
If concrete posts have moved already then they weren't installed correctly in the first place. If two are already shifting, then I seriously suggest you make sure he fixes ALL of them, as he has surely dug the same holes for all, (IE way too small). Just fixing the wobbly ones is just putting off the inevitable.

  • Hi all,

Just thought I would update you on the fencing issue we had. Not surprisingly we've not really got any further forward. The good news is that the guy agreed to come back and, in his words,
"underpin the three posts nearest the house (i.e. the second, third and fourth posts) and replace the end panel away from the house (i.e. the very end panel at the end of the garden) and make sure that this panel fits snugly".

We'd agreed a date (monday 24th Jan) but he didn't show. I finally got hold of him after lunch and he infomed me he couldn't make it. So we had to leave a key for him to come round when I wasn't in on Wednesday (I had to work) a couple of days later.

By the time they had finished it was too dark to properly inspect the work and they didn't stick around to see if we were happy with it. Given that we work from 7 am until 17.00 we couldn't really inspect the fence properly until the Saturday. When we did we noted that the end panel was still not fitting snugly and the post was still not aligned correctly which meant that we could see the panel moving in the wind.

We called the handyman back and he and a colleague came on Monday 31st Jan to take another look. All they did was screw in a couple of screws into the panel and tried to leave without even asking us if we were satisfied. We managed to get them back into the garden to explain what they had actually done and the guys tried to assure us that the post didn't need realigning as that it was in his words "solid as a rock" and "would not move at all". We were not at all happy with the way they treated us and I emphasised that it was in their intrestes to get it done properly and if it did move they would need to come back again and sort it out. With that, they left.

Well, as you probably have seen, we've had some strong winds and the end panel has again come out because the post has moved again.

So we now need to get them out again, but we want to get someone to independently assess what is going on and what work needs to be done in order to get this fence to stay up. Any suggestions for next steps would be grealy appreciated!

    Yours frustrated,

    Jo

What does he mean by underpin the posts? How did he do that?

He should have taken the posts out, dug the hole correctly ie: 2 feet deep, 1 foot wide and poured concrete in. If he is using post fix then he would need a more than 1 bag per post or to fill the hole with some extra type 1 or rubble or something.
He would need to find a decent day to do it as well, one where it isn't raining heavily or too cold.

How did you get this cowboy back in the first place?

Contact the office of fair trading and it sounds like you will need to threaten him with small claims court.
