Advice please

i have a car that my ex husband gave to me when we seperated over 2 years ago. He has had the car from new and it is now 8 years old.

The car has been registered in my name for the past 2 years and I have a bill of sale from my ex stating he gave me the car but no money was exchanged.

Ex is now saying that their is outstanding debt on the car to the value of just over 4 grand. When he purchased the car in 2002 the finance was 12000 plus interest over 5 years so why 3 years on can their be finance outstanding?

I have just had a HPI check and everything has come back clear on it,

Ideally I would like to sell the car and get something that is cheaper to insure and cheaper on road tax but can I sell it?

Oh and the car is only worth 3 grand now
total debt at LBM £4800
Debt as of Mar 2016 £1790 Hope to be debt free July 2016:eek:
