What needs doing when I move in?

I am a FTB and have just exchanged contracts. This seems like a silly question but what do I need to do in terms of gas, elec and water when I move in?

First thing you do when you get in the door is take readings. You don't have to call the companies straight away, you can leave it for a day or so while you get settled but you will need accurate readings from when you moved in.
Water, you can call to cancel your own and give them your new address at the same time. They'll probably owe you some money if you're not metered and they will transfer the credit or send you a cheque.
Hopefully, your property information form will tell you who the gas & elec suppliers are. If not, we've just called British Gas, asked if we're with them. Even if we're not, they've told us who our suppliers are. They'll try and sell you their product, but we all know they're the most expensive, don't we?
You'll need to think about changing suppliers to get the cheapest deal at somepoint. Read Martin's article on the main site
