In 50s, worth putting O, A level grades on CV?

  • I usually just enter the number of passes, including English and Maths, with grades from A to C. My O Levels were almost 25 years ago and I was gobsmacked when I applied for admin jobs with the Police and the Civil Service, that they wanted to see my certificates! It cost me loads to get confirmation of the results as goodness knows where the certificates are now!
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

    Wow
I'm constantly amazed by the reference to CVs.
In my line of work (social care and voluntary sector) CVs are positively frowned on. In fact they normally stipulate 'No CVs'. No you have to go the whole hog and fill in a lengthy application form each time.
I think it comes across as sad to be listing O level grades if you are past middle age. And be warned, one local authority I applied to 12 months ago was quite happy for the qualifications start at higher education, but anything you put down had to be prooved. So even though I had a degree and was pushing 60, because I had listed the number of O levels, I was asked to provide the evidence!
If you ever register with an agency, they formulate their own 'mini CV' from the info you give them. It's interesting to see what they put down. It certainly would not include 0 level grades for someone past 50. By that point I think employment history is more relevant.
  • The OP was asking about CVs. An application form is different - if it asks for all your O-levels, 11-plus result, cycle proficiency test, 50 meters breast stroke, shoe size etc then you must of course put them down. Whether a CV or Application Form is wanted varies by sector - usually, but not always, the public sector wants a form filling in. It also varies by level of job - my Company asks for CVs for professional and managerial positions but uses a standard application form for the riff raff.
  • I don't believe that ANY school grades matter once you've either had a University education OR been in regular employment for, at least 5 years.

Not strictly true - it depends on the profession.

For most careers though, I think once you reach a certain level of experience, A-Levels etc drop out of the picture.
