Not quite the same, it comes up with a screen that says "windows could not start because the following file was missing or corrupt \windows\system32\config\system
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set up using the original set CD rom0 -
What file is missing?0

Your registry is corrupt
try safe mode with command prompt, then run chkdsk c: /F
if you don't need any data, use the recovery partition, if it's still there, otherwise you'll need to search for the disc or borrow one.!!

ive no idea what the revovery partion is or "run chkdsk is about, but from your answer I assume we can't use the vista disk0 -
No, Vista is a different operating system. You'll need to obtain an XP disc from someone.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

recovery partition is a means to get the system as it was fresh from the factory in 10 minutes (unless you deleted it during the last reinstall), it will wipe all your data, usually accessed with ALT F10 at boot!!
