Hi guys,

I am not a technophobe or daft when it comes to PC's and Laptops so to speak, but when it comes to security I am a complete dunce. :p
I am looking for a free to run Security Programme for my Laptop as I am concerned that I may be attacked at any minute by a worm or trojan and as I use my laptop for banking, social networking and of course, Money Saving:money: I want to keep it safe. I am a skin flint when it comes to buying PC software as I think it is overpriced to say the least. So, to cut an already long thread short, I need a free to download/receive security programme. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium and its a brand new laptop (3 months old)

Thanks Guys:)

Some say Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast work well for free .

My only recommends for security are Esets Nod 32 or Kaspersky both paid ? for though kaspersky free with barclays on-line banking and often found at a cheap price online .

avira or avast av, with malwarebytes anti-malware for on-demand scanning..

avg is carp, and microsoft security essentials has dropped down the detection ratings lists..

Avira or Avast for free antivirus scanners, downloadable from filehippo.com.

Also Malwarebytes (Malware scanner) which is free, downloadable from filehippo.com.

OP, what AV do you already have on your machine? I'm presuming a trial edn of McAfee or Norton which was pre-installed?
I'm afraid that if you have no AV and you've been online for 3 months, then you are most certainly already infected, especially if you've been on social networking sites. It usually takes about 20 minutes.
AV protection is not an optional luxury, it's essential from day one.
Avira, Avast or MSE are all OK, AVG is not.
If you have Barclays online banking, Kaspersky is free and excellent.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I currently have the free trial of Norton. I also have some form of Microsoft Security installed but I am not 100% as I am in work at the moment so cant double check. Pretty sure there is a Microsoft Security package on there. I shall deffo be downloading one of the above mentioned when i go home tho.

Before you install any other AV program you need to uninstall both Norton and MSE (use the Norton Removal tool to get rid of the latter). You cannot have 2 AV programs on the same system, they will 'fight' each other. Download the one you want, save it, uninstall the other two and then install your choice.
Having said that, MSE is not at all bad and you could just use that-but if so you must remove Norton.
Your PC would not have been supplied with both pre-installed.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
