Car Repair Help

Hoping someone might be able to give me some advise.

I have been to garage yesterday and been told that i need to have the following done to the car. I was wondering if anyone had a rough idea on what i should be paying for the following parts for a Clio.

Front Wishbones

Steering Drumsticks

Tracking

Wheel Alignment

Any help would be great.

Cheers

    engine size? year? power steering?

tracking is wheel alignment... that should cost about £20-40 depends where you go tbh
    wishbones circa 30-40 a side
steering drumsticks???- im assuming these are track rod ends being as you mention tracking.. again 15-30 each

plug your reg into eurocarparts website and they will give you prices.

then theres labour on top of that..

Thank you for that, so what would you say if you have been quoted £400 for the work, parts and fitting etc.

wishbones approx 30-50 per side depending on make/model of car
track rod ends approx £15-20 each so £150 max for parts leaving £250 labour.

i would guess they are quoting for a full 4 wheel laser alignment at about £70 then the rest is labour for track rod ends and wishbones??

to see if it is a good deal we need to know what car as some wishbones are simple and others are a PITA to change.
My old laguna2 wishbones were a knightmare i had to drop subframe to get bolts out so labour for them would be more than say a vauxhall that is easy.

It's for a Renault Clio. The garage said that the bushes need changing but then i don't understand why i need to have all this other work done. Can they not just change ths bushes? They did mention that the inside of the tyre is getting worn and then when i am breaking the tyres are going backwards.

    Hope this makes sense.

They must have given you an idea of why the other stuff needed doing when they told you it needed to be done, surely?

Okay, assuming the bushes you mention are those attached to the lower arms (wishbones), then the wishbones will need replacing as a whole because it'll be easier and probably cheaper than replacing the bushes alone. Also, alot of auto factors don't stock the bushes alone, because for the relatively cheap price of the wishbones, it wouldn't be worth their while.

Uneven tyre wear is can indicate that the wheel alignment needs adjusting anyway. Not sure I understand what you're saying about the tyres going backwards when you are braking though...

Assuming a steering drumstick is a track rod end (never heard of this term before), then the tracking will need to be done as, even though they can get it close to as it was before they started the work, it'll more than likely not be accurate, therefore they have to do the tracking (wheel alignment), too. As tracking is wheel alignment anyway, this erradicates one of the jobs you were unsure about.

!!!!!! when breaking Tyres are going backwards?
If I were you I would take it for a second opinion somewhere else before getting any work done as what they are saying sounds strange to me.
  • I think they probably mean the wheels are toeing out, worn trackrod ends could cause that, well in and out.Maybe they are adding on Kentucky fried chicken drumsticks into the quote.
I'd expect that to be between £250-400 depending on what the parts cost.It will be worth getting another quote or 2.
