house i am buying has no roof lining?

Hi

i am in the process of buying a house due to exchange next week. I went in the attic to check what it was like up there and the amount of dust suprised me. it was thick and circulating the room.

i also noticed that you could just see the roof tiles, there was no inner lining like there is on my current house

the house is 1930s build and the roof does look old but it concerns me there is no lining.

Is there a way to put lining on the inside of the roof or would there be a reason why there is no lining on the inside or is the lining only put on when a new roof is?

thanks

Most 30s properties are like that. Its the way they were built and the rof as designed and built doesn't need a "lining". I presume by lining you mean felted?

If you so wish there is no reason why you should not tack a modern technology polypropylene underlay on the underside of your roof timbers to cut down on heat loss and dirt ingress but make sure you leave a gap at the ridge and at the eaves for ventilation.

    Cheers

    Hi

yes that is what i meant, there is no felt inbetween the loft and tiles.

My concern is the amount of dust/dirt that is circulating up there and i would like to reduce that once i have removed the dust.

    thanks

Don't worry, it will no doubt be better built than any modern house.;)

Why are you worried about dust? All loft spaces are dusty. Its just one of those things.

They're not all the same. We've got a 1930s roof like techmob describes and it's very dusty from the old torching which is disintegrating and very cold and damp compared to my parents' modern roof space which is clean and snug.

But your parents roof space will end up being dusty.

It hasn't in the forty years they've lived there and I don't see why it should as they don't have any exposed torching plaster to disintegrate.

I have worked in quite a few old houses over the years and they were no better built than modern ones. Most houses have always been spec built and still are. In addition there were few building regulations to be observed so there was no incentive for the builder to produce anything more than he could get away with.
I can afford anything that I want.

i am not worried about the dust but the amount that is up there didn't look normal.

it might be been to do with the attic being boarded up and you could physically see the dust easier.

I wanted to clear it so there is not so much up there as we will probably be in and out of there allot while doing the house up and i did not want the dust to circulate as it is now because all that thick dust is just circulating the room and i thought if there was lining on the inside of the roof it would help reduce the circulation and the amount of dust/dirt coming in
