Hoover - cable winding mechanism broken

Hi,
We have a small hoover which works perfectly well except it has one of those automatic cable winding mechanisms where you push a button and it winds the cable back inside the machine.
This seems damaged/stuck so that when you pull the cable out it automatically winds it back in again.
Pls does anyone know if we could easily fix this ourselves or is it beyond repair? It's an unrecognisable brand, 1600 watt pull along hoover. Any tips/advice would be great.
I know new hoovers are cheap but this works fine otherwise so am loathed to bin it.
Many thx.

Nearly free version = Clamp a couple of cable ties and some PVC tape around it when it's oulled out to stop it retracting into the hole, then just wind the cable round the Hoover when you've finished with it.
Costs money = putting it to a small local repair shop and getting lucky with him finding a part for it.
Most risky = if you take it apart yourself you might damage the rest of the hoover leaving it out of order. Depends on how competent you are at diassembling and rebuilding plastic hoover parts.;) Only you know the answer to that. imho it's probably a little plastic latch that has snapped, but of course I'm only guessing.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Hi there,
Many thanks for your helpful reply. I hadn't even thought of the cable ties option - might give that a try, although the pull/tension is quite strong so it seems like the winding mechanism would be constantly tugging which mightn't be too safe when it's in use...!
Definitely not worth a repair bill given the cost of small hoovers these days.
Will try the cable ties but if not will try dismantling - not at all competent but perhaps worth a try in case it's something obvious ....
Thx again.0 -
Perhaps you could put a clothes peg or a Bull Dog clip on the cable, and take it off again when you want it to retract.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
We have a bosch hoover and had the opposite problem in that the cable wouldn't retract. We took it to a local repair shop who fixed it for £10.0

Hi there,
Many thanks for the extra replies - a clothes peg is a great idea as that would be quite a strong hold - will give that a try methinks. Thanks again.0
