how about VW passat 2007 model but its diesal, around 6K on autotrader, its G band for tax which is around £155 for 12 months. its not very big car but very very good one.
For me it has to be diesal all the time...not just for more milage but diesal car have longer engine life then petrol....diesel car is best if u mostly drive locally...petrol will give you problem soon or later if you drive more locally..that's my personal experience for over 10 years.
Honda accord 2006-07 model is also good one with 7k budget.0 -
Check out the servicing cost on all the short listed cars it can vary a lot.
How long will he be keeping it might be worth looking at something higher miles.0 -
Your dad is a grown man, let him make his decision however he wants. Its his money, not yours.0

Thanks all for your replies.
I think a Fiesta may be a wee bit small, the Passat/Accord is a good shout actually.
He's asked my advice and asked me to help him look for a car, hence the request to see if I am right in steering him away from diesels; maybe not so much these days as in previous years. I've run both petrol and diesel in the past; unlike my father with his work van, however, I have't misfuelled mine (another worry!). Is there a premium on used diesels as much as there is on new ones?
I will also point him towards the i30 as a consideration as whilst he's not a badge snob, he probably would lean more towards the i30 than the Ceed (even though I know they're the same car, essentially).
He'll probably keep the car for 4-5 years, as he has with the Mondeo. I think the servicing costs are an essential check and will alert him to look them up, although he's not the sort of person you want to buy a used car from (servicing to him is 'when I remember')...
All of this does beg the question though as to why anyone buys a petrol in these days, given the benefits of diesel longevity, running costs and fuel economy.0 -
fiesta mk6.5 1.4tdci £30 a year tax and great on the juice can eaisly pick up a decent one for 7k
The OP is going to hate me. I had a 1997 Mk.2 Mondeo 1.8 petrol. 35mpg and £200+ VED. I now have a 2004 Mk.6 Fiesta 1.4 diesel. 54mpg and £30 VED. From the drivers seat, it looks and feels like a Mk.3 Mondeo. With the parcel shelf out, but the rear seats still up, there's more than enough room for my Mum's wheelchair. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
we fix cars so for cheap running costs look at

No, not at all; it's helpful to have the viewpoint of someone in a similar situation! Unfortunately he needs to squeeze a greyhound in too and I'm not sure he would fit comfortably!0 -
toyota Prius
- he won't wear it out at 5,000 miles a year
- 56.5 mpg urban consumption (in theory)
- £10 road tax
- not diesel0 -
prius pefect, cheaper road tax, It will probably use as much fuel as the 1.8 mondeo so he will feel at home.
