I asked mr divadee and he reckons that you can use only white spririt to thin paint with turps you cant thin paint with. Otherwise they are exactly the same.

They do more or less the same job. Turps is the old fashioned natural organic solvent and is now comparatively expensive. White spirit is more easily available and cheaper.
Turpentine is a semifluid resin obtained from trees, mainly pines of the genus Pinus. A volatile oil called spirit of turpentine, oil of turpentine or, colloquially, turps can be extracted by distillation. Turpentine has been described simply as "distilled trees". Turpentine is used as a solvent, especially for thinning oil-based paints, and as a raw material for the chemical industry. Turpentine was also used in folk medicine for the treatment of intestinal worms or mixed with animal fat as a primitve chest rub for nasal and throat complaints. Some modern chest rubs still contain some turpentine (e.g., Vick's Vaporub).
White spirit is a colourless, liquid mixture of volatile hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum and used as a solvent for paints. It is often known as turpentine substitute because the original solvent for paints was turpentine, a naturally-occurring hydrocarbon extracted from pine resin.0 -
Thanks for the explanation, I've got some turps substitute to thin paint and wash my brushes with, but in the DIY shops you see turps sub and white spirit next to each other on the shelves but the labels say the same, so just wanted to know if there was any difference.0
