Is there currently a shortage of currants?

I've run down my dried fruit with all my Festive Baking :rudolf:
Went to stock up; bought raisins and sultanas, but no currants to be had, either in the big Tesco, or my local Co-op
Anyone else having this problem

Last weekend I must have visited every supermarket there is looking for currants. I finally found some in Sainsburys. It took two days to find them!!!!!0

I had to check..... thought it might have been a spelling mistake.:o
so there is a current shortage of currants...have you tried your local Co-op or corner shop?
They'd be a bit dearer than the supermarkets but you'd get your cake made.
Have you anything you can use as an alternative in the recipe- dried cranberries or otherwise?Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

An alternative would be a bag of mixed fruit..currants, sultanas raisins & candied peel. No good of course if you are looking to make spotted !!!!!! & the like,
, but a solution perhaps for Christmas cakes etc...me too...i thought 'a current shortage of what?????'
PS. Shouldn't that be a current shortage of watt?????

I know that there was a currant shortage last year - something to do with the weather being bad in Greece so the harvests were poor. My family are bakers and they were horrified at how much the price shot up. Haven't heard about there being a poor harvest this year, but I'd imagine the economic crisis in Greece hasn't helped much.0
