Icesave - please think before you apply

The Icelandic fishermen have decided to start whaling again. This means that the largest sentient creature of the seas is going to be harpooned and then targeted with a grenade to kill it.
The whale will take up to 30 minutes to die. It's taken years for the whale population to be revived from previous perilous levels - it will only take a few years for countries such as Iceland & Norway to decimate it again.
Icesave is operated by a bank in Iceland - please think before you apply for this savings account - do you want to be part of the 'revived' whaling nation.
There are many accounts available with high interest (OK just a few tenths of a point lower than they offer) so please look around and take just a little less interest but have a clear conscience.
(When you are shopping don't forget that Iceland Freezer shops are owned by an Icelandinc investment group)
Be assured I' not your regular 'bunny hugger' but in the case of whales and the methods used to hunt them I am very vociferous.
Thanks for reading this - enjoy your day.

As I posted on another thread:
Out of interest, do you investigate the investment strategies of all your financial providers and their subsidiaries in terms of 'ethics'?
And would you avoid accounts with all UK institutions if you disagreed with an aspect of UK government policy?
... they're a commercial entity, not a branch of government; do you think Tony Blair ran his ideas for the invasion of Iraq past, say, Leeds & Holbeck Building Society?!0 -
Businesses can and do put pressure on Governments (at least they do here). But, as has been said elsewhere, simply boycotting the account is not going to get your message across; you need to tell them why.0

The original post has valid points and they are factual and is entitled to express them, and yours is an opinion in respect to the possibility of the boycott being effective. I also believe that nothing ventured nothing gained.
The banking institution is in the business of creating profit through banking, and as such is not involved in the political system, but perhaps the government will hear of the worldwide disapproval and take heed.
I also welcome the upward movement of savings rates. To be happy you need to make someone happy.0 -
Baugar, the Icelandic business that owns the retail chain Iceland, also have if I remember a 5% stake in Somerfield, and in my memory I seem to remember they bought a high street jewellers, Ratners maybe. If you are going to take a stance like this marksw5, then you will need to do a considerable amount of research, because Baugar have far reaching interests in the UK, and you could unwittingly be supporting them.
Just so that you know.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

Mmm, if Japan restarts whaling, it's going to make shopping for electrical goods pretty tricky for some folk...:)0 -
My boyfriend has asked me not to get an Icesave account because of the whaling issue. I don't have any money to put in it at the moment anyway (about to pay off stoozepot from ICICI) so we will have the debate when I do, but just wanted to let you know you're not the only one OP!0

Now whilst I don't agree with Whaling I don't get the connection. Do the Icelandic fishermen run ICESAVE in their spare time.
There are far worse things going on in the world and most of it seems to be fuelled by the UK and US governements, do we also boycott our own goods and services.0 -
I don't have one of these accounts and have never heard of them, but if I did, I would close it straight away!
If anyone knows of any other ways I can help to stop this barbaric torture of the gentle giants of the ocean then please post here.......

I agree with you in part (hence in my post above I said we would have a debate!) but I wanted to let the OP know they weren't the only one to feel this way.
The reason I say "in part" is that those who run Landsbanki/Icesave are the ones who can put pressure on the Icelandic government, if our displeasure is made known.0 -
