ESTA Question

Hiya, we have already been to USA earlier this year, so we all have valid ESTA's, the question I am struggling to find an answer to is:

Can an existing ESTA expire whilst you are still in the USA, or must it be valid for the whole stay and maybe slightly after?

Reason I ask is because we are planning a return in 2012 but need to know if we just need to arrive before expiry of ESTA or if we need to be there and back before expiry?

Any links would be much appreciated.

The ESTA just needs to be valid on the day you arrive in the USA. It's a permit to apply to enter the US, nothing more.
