Display/Graphic card problem - Please help!

Hi Everyone,
I am new to this part of the forum, prefering to hang out in the mortgages or house buying section.... But I need some help and am hoping some clever Techie will know what I have done and how to fix it.
My Laptop, which is about 3 years old now, seems to have lost some of the functionality of the graphics card which is severly hampering my enjoyment of Football Manager 2011!
I believe I have an ATI Radeon grpahics card of some form, but couldnt tell you exactly which one as I am at work right now.
I believe I have always had it set at the highest resolution, which I think was refered to as XGA or XVGA???
Anyway, a few days ago I moved my house round and cancelled my sky package. I decided I could watch Celeb though my laptop, but display it on the TV.
I pluged in a VGA lead to the back of the laptop and the TV then started randomly hitting the function buttons as I believed one of those tells the laptop to display via the VGA lead as well as on the screen.
Then when I go back to playing Football Manager everything looks a bit odd, I realise the resolution has been changed, so I go into properties thinking I can simply change it back to whatever I had it before, but the option to increase the resolution has now gone!
Can anyone tell me what I have done, and how to fix it?
I think its something to do with the function keys or the fact I plugged a VGA lead in the back.
Any help would be greatly apreciated.
Cheers

XP? Vista?
It sounds like it has changed the resolution to match your TV and applied that to the laptop's screen. I'm not sure why it wouldn't let you change it so long as you've disconnected it from the TV. Do you know the resolution of your laptop's screen?
I'd reconnect it to the TV and cycle through the function key options until it isn't outputting to the TV and then try changing the laptop's resolution again.
If that doesn't do it, updating the driver may shake things out. Get them from https://www.amd.com0 -
Its XP,
I was thinking about maybe updating the driver as well.
Cheers for that, I would never have thought to reconnect to the TV and do the function keys again!

Thanks for the tip off.
I now know which button I need to know to get the screen showing on the TV (F8) and I then found what was wrong and fixed the problem.
There was a tick box unticked in the properties box which said something like Apply settings to monitor. I ticked that and now its game on!!
