Crystal Cat Litter... 30 days? I think NOT!

Good Morning Guys,
I wanted some advice...
I have been using the expensive crystal litter for my Siamese as he seems to like it compared to the others and it traps smells in really quickly however, I seem to be getting through about 1 bag (1.5kg) every week-10 days!
The info on the bag says that it should last up to 30 days so what exactly is going wrong?!?! Has anyone else had this problem? I seem to be spending around £32 a month on cat litter which is very excessive!:o
As he is a Siamese I understand his metabolism is high and so he eats little and often and pees little and often
I scoop the poop every other day when it gets dehydrated but this morning the litter tray just stinks of ammonia which is gross! (I have changed it now btw!)
I cant help thinking that maybe his tray is too big for one bag of the litter so I am going to try 2 bags tonight and see if makes any difference (he has one of those litter trays that has a cat-flap and is covered although it doesnt have a door on it anymore as he doesnt like it!). Can anyone give me some advise on any alternatives or tricks of the trade? The litter tray is in the kitchen so it is really offensive when it starts to smell... I might even consider getting a different litter tray- does anyone know of any good ones?....
Sorry for all the questions but this situ is really getting on my nerves! I am sure he doesnt like using a smelly litter tray either!
Thank you! x

I scoop the poop as it happens if I am there or a.s.a.p if not. Get it out before too much damage is done to the litter and it smells.0

A covered tray works really well at keeping the smells down, you can buy cat loos in Argos. Lily doesn't like the door though so had to take it off lol.0

I use the crystal litter for my cat ... the instructions on the bag say it will not be as effective in a covered litter box as the crystals can't dry out as well. You should clear out solids as soon as you seen them, and you need to give the litter a good mix every day as well.
Good luck0 -
I used to use the crystals but also found they did not last that long and were expensive. I also used a covered tray. I switched to the sawdust pellets and have never looked back. Cheaper and virtually no smell. You can tell easily which bits need scooping out because it turns to sawdust.0

I use Catsan - seems to do the job. The other thing I do that seems to make the litter last a little longer is to line the bottom of the tray with newspaper (I just chuck the whole of the local free paper in the bottom) - it seems to help soak up any pee that's going to drip down through, and means the whole lot just slides into a bag when you come to change the lot. Also have a covered tray (with the door removed because she hasn't got the stability to stand on her back end and push the door open with her front) - eliminates the pong factor.
I tried that pink litter at one point and ended up with a black cat with pink socks on her white paws. Looked funny - but I've got cream carpet!Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
Pura Moonlight Litter - I started using this last year. and wouldn't change it. I buy 20l bags (about £15), and it lasts for ever. The last 4 bags lasted more than 4 months, and I have 2 litter trays for my cat. It clumps well, and holds the smell.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

This is my first choice too. We used crystal type for a very long time, and our Siameses liked it, but when given a choice they choose this over it. We have also recently tried a few others...e.g. compostable ones made from corn, but they aren't as good as the moonlight litters, for smell or for longevity. I clear out the poop and the ''lumps'' of wee, which moonlight makes very firm and solid at least once, but more often twice a day. we very rarely need a complete change with moonlight and my regular clearing out.0
