Must I?- write 16x on 16 speed DVDs?

Almost bought some 16 spped DVD blank media today, but it had a warning on the pack stating that if it isn't used ina DVD writer that can handle 16X then it could cause problems in the drive and DVD.

Is this true? Can I not just set it at 4X or 16x (my DVD writers maximum). The DVD writer is Sony DVD RW DW-U18A. Don't fancy risking upgrading the firmware, just would like to write on 16x discs at 4 or 8x.

is it OK?

doesnt matter most dvd writing software will either be set at automatic or fastest. I tend to let the software write at the speed it feels is the best for the medium type put into the drive. so, try auto, or fastest and try a disk and see.

I buy 16x and 8x dvd discs, but I never burn them at that rate, always slower, and that way I never seem to get any coasters, I usually set them to half the disc rate.

With a 16x blank dvd, you can write upto that speed but don't have to stick to 16x (use 1x 2x 4x... etc).

Wonderfullife was right in saying that the slower writing speeds tend to fail less.

However, having said that, with my BenQ dvd writer I can write my 4x Ritek dvds at 16x speed and they always come out ok :cool:

I use to wright at maximum speed allowed until i was informed that Purchased dvd's play on the players at 1x and the faster you burn the disk the more chance you have of burning out your dvd player. although when i back my dvd's up they dont work anywhere near as good as before therefor being useless and wasting dvd's. so i have went back to burning at maximum speed, all of the above is probably alot of tosh but when someone in the know tells you something you tend to believe them
