Passport expires in May, can I go to france in April?

My boyfriend's grandparents live in France and we're saving to go go and visit them in April next year, but my passport runs out in May. Does anyone know how long I need to have left on it when we go?
We probably won't be able to afford another holiday for ages so I'd rather not have to pay for a new passport just yet. Any advice?

We had to get a new passport a while a go as the travel agents said that you have to have 6 months on your passport on your return journey!!0

Travel Agents frequently give duff advice on this topic. Well maybe not duff but hyper-cautious.
They say 6 months because some countries say 6 months - that way they don't have to actually know the rule for any particular country with the risk of getting it wrong0 -
for France you are fine if your British passport is valid for the length of your stay in France

For the official answer, see the FCO website:Entry Requirements - Passports
You need a passport valid for the proposed period of your stay to enter France.0 -
For the official answer, see the FCO website:
To be a bit picky (over picky maybe) - that's not official. For that you need a French government website.
I've known the FCO be wrong.....0 -
Unfortunately, the French Embassy website is not loading for me - the FCO is certainly more official than random posters on a forum posting opposing views with no reference whatsoever. To be a bit picky (over picky maybe) - that's not official. For that you need a French government website.
