Am I nasty/mean

Just been called a nasty person!!!
3 children where I live, most of which are almost as tall as me, guess about 12+ came round trick or treating with just a simple mask, and I refused and said they were too early. In fact they said 'Penny for Halloween' which is what the older ones on a Friday night usually say.
They said I was nasty and mean, but why should I pay for their booze and cigarettes. Don't know how parents can let them out this late, they probably down the pub or something to be honest.
Think I was more annoyed that they woke my 5 year old up

I don't think you are mean.
I think it's wrong to let children harass strangers begging for money.0 -
No I dont think you are mean at all. I love halloween I get lots of sweets in a big tub and I love it when the little ones come knocking at the door. Me and Oh tell them how scary they look and they are all excited and their parents are usually in the background, and to me that is EXACTLY how it should be, for the children. Once it gets to 8.30ish I don't answer the door as the little ones are in bed or at least gone home and the older ones look at you like you just s@@@ on them if you offer them sweets. They take the pleasure out of the evening in MHO.
They don't try thry don't dress up they may as well knock on your door and say give me a £5 or I'll damamge you car.
Good on you for standing up to them.

Hi there lil me,
I don't think you're mean at all, I think the children are very cheeky to knock around 11 days before Halloween, I think you'd have given them something on Halloween but what is thing asking for money for Halloween? I think it's so rude, it's always been penny for the guy. I would be cross at the parents too, why are these children allowed to be out, knocking on peoples' doors effectively begging. Put it out of your mind, I can't believe how rude it is and I would have acted in a similar way

It was because my son woke up and heard them say I was mean that it bothered me as he was repeating it. But agree with you, I forgot what date it was, 11 days is way too early isn't it. I suppose if I had given in tonight they would have been around every night.
I do the same with the sweets etc, I bought the little bags of dried fruit and raisins last year, the little ones appreciate it but the older kids (if you can call them that) expect money. I usually take my boys to a party somewhere as I won't allow them out trick or treating at all, maybe that is mean but it's the safety aswell as the fact it's glorified begging and I would rather they did something better. Wonder how many elderly they pester tonight. Parents probably have no idea. One day I might be more organised...........

Hi Lil me
I would be appalled if this was my son, mind you I would never let him out and do this. I would also never give them money, I do give them sweets, last year I bought sweets for the children who would come and most of them were polite and said thank you but some were rude and didn't like the sweets I had so threw them in my garden and all the way up the street, ingrates!!! I was reading about your IB worries on your other post, you can get a crisis loan or an emergency payment if you are really stuck. It must be hard with a little boy and it is upsetting when your children are in bed and it's hard to settle them again.

I remember going out on the 31st oct all dressed up and having to perform a song or tell jokes and whatever we got we were gratefull forT&C APPLY0 -
I have never given anyone anything for Halloween, always told them I don't agree with it and never let my son go 'Trick or Treat-ing' when he was young.
In latter years I just put a sign on the door saying 'No Trick or Treat' and don't get bothered.
I may be nasty and mean, but I don't care,.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Oh yes, more about greed than anything else. I probably get my views from my parents. We only ever went to houses dressed up that asked my parents to send us round as they had bought some sweets. My Dad hosted parties when we were young, one year we had a great Harry the Spider's Birthday Party, which was a Halloween party for me and my friends. He made all yummy spooky food etc and the kids loved it and kept us inside and safe without seeming to be mean. One day I might be more organised...........
