You're all forgetting one major factor, what they think they can get away with. The goal isn't to give you a standardised price or one that everyone will think is fair, their goal is to charge you the highest price that you will pay and be happy with.

While this is true, the first quote I received must also, presumably, have included a profit element?

I'm hoping the reason the second quote was 83% higher than the first was not down to pure profit.

so now you know what the factors may be don`t you :T
  • Hello
Sorry about punctuation, the point I was trying to make, was if the work is broken down into stages prior to getting the quote, then it should be straight forward enough to establish the most reasonable quote, you are spot on when you say they will not be happy giving you that much detail, that should tell a story in itself, I can't for one second think that builders in your area are so busy that they would not be interested in your work in the current climate

Good input like the first post.

Do you pause for breath when you speak?

Good evening: ignore the peanut gallery. Folks should show more concern for the quality/safety/accuracy of the advice given on this forum rather than someone's spelling, punctuation and grammar.;)

You are of course right that they should do but unfortunately there are probably many, like me, who found the original post by Topplasterer far too difficult to read. I gave up before getting halfway which does tend to negate any good points the post may have had regarding quality/safety/accuracy.

A shame... you'll be missing out on excellent posts chock full of valuable advice and info. MSErs should keep in mind forum etiquette when posting.
