Saying you were "forced" to sell implies no option and no responsibility for the decision. The words used shed some light on attitude of OP and of portraying a picture that's not quite accurate. I'd say it's relevant to the current situation.

People use words differently, she most likely chose to say "forced" instead of "We believed it was the only viable option we had at the time". It doesn't matter anyway, it doesn't affect the issue she has and turning this thread into a "but you weren't forced!" thing is a waste of time. She just wants help with the tax issue, not to be told she's clearly making it all up because obviously anyone can move whenever they want no problem.

Edited to add.... if it's of no consequence, why did OP mention this.

People elaborate on insignificant points all the time, it doesn't mean it's important. She most likely assumed giving the entire back story on why they bought would help you all understand her circumstance better and give more accurate advice.

Do you realise you may have a rather large tax bill for the ground floor flat you sold. You might want to mention this to your accountant.

Why? I thought the OP lived in the ground floor flat right up to the point where they sold it. So it was their main residence => no CGT.
  • I wish you all the best Janet, try not to worry yourself this is nothing that can't be fixed. Your accountant should see you right. Please let us know how you get on. x
