A very rough guess for S Yorks area is £500 a week, based on charges in W Yorks.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • Thanks for your replys, my grandmother is in hospital at the moment but has to go in a home she will be self funded as she has about £10,000 over the amount you can have. Would i have to find her bank statements to proof this.
    Thanks Again

........ my grandmother is in hospital at the moment but has to go in a home......

This is an issue I am discussing on another thread.
Have you heard of Continuing Healthcare Funding?
It might apply in your GM's case.
    Best of fortune.
  • Hi, When we had the family meeting regarding my grandmother going in a home i asked about continuing health care and they said they couldnt see her being able to get it unless she needed a hoist etc so i didnt ask any more questions as she does not need a hoist.

Grandmother is 87yrs old she had a stroke in March causing her to lose use in left side she regained use but was very week and had to use a zimmer frame, and unable to cook make drinks etc

Shes has had another stroke and lost use in left hand arm and leg
this was 4wks ago and things have not improved she cant use left hand and arm and can not walk at all, she is laid in bed all day in hospital apart from 1hr a day because she has reacurring pressure sores.

Since her 1st stroke she has started with dementia

    she has cataracts
arterial fibrulation (irregular heart beat )
    skin tears to legs
as well as stated above cannot walk and use left hand and arm

would you think that it is worthwhile trying to get continuing health care are would she not fit the criteria.

    Thanks

YES! read the thread linked to above. it won't be easy, and I am no expert, but IMO they are fobbing you off.

At the very least it sounds as though your Grandmother will need a care home with the ability to provide a nursing element to her care. There is a nursing supplement of about £101 per week which can be paid by the NHS. However prior to the nursing supplement being considered the PCT (Primary Care Trust) must carry out an initial checklist to see if a full CHC assessment should be carried out. The initial checklist is part of the hospital discharge proceedure and the patient or patient's representative should be informed of its outcome.

You should make the hospital aware the you know what they should be doing otherwise they will try to fob you off with statements like you have already had. The need or not for a hoist is a fatuous way of looking at the need for CHC funding. Essentially the judgement is based on if the patient's primary need is medical rather than domestic. With your Granmothers list of medical problems it is difficult to countenance how anybody could not believe her primary need is medical. However almost certainly the NHS will try to deny liability and obtaining CHC funding for your relative will be an uphill struggle. It is a lot of work because you need to inform yourself of the rules because the NHS almost always will try to get out of their responsibilities.

I think you may find that a care home with nursing will be more in the £650/week plus area so it is likely your granmother will be at the minimum savings limit within 4-5 months. It would also be worth asking social services about their assistance at and below the savings limit as financial assessments for this can take some time.

Please also bear in mind that care homes almost always charge self-funders more for the same service than council assisted residents and the transition from self-funding to council assisted can cause a funding gap to open up as the care homes are often relutant to reduce the fees to the council assisted levels.
