Is there any claims experts on here?

My neice knocked over my plasma TV 2 weeks ago, It was giving to me as an engagement gift by a member of family back in June.
I'm trying to claim it on the house insurance but the problem is I don't have any proof of purchase i.e receipts , box or manual. I've chucked out the manual along with the box and it was paid in cash.

all I have is the remote and the component leads that came with it.

The insurance company who are handling the claim requested for pictures of the damaged TV plus a letter from a tv repair shop for an estimate. Which I got and sent all the documents over to them...
The TV repair shop said it wasn't economical to fix as it would cost more to replace the screen than what the TV is worth (it's a 3D model)

I spoke to the insurance company today to see what's happening with my claim and they said the underwriter wants a receipt as it was only purchased in June this year. I went to Argos today to see how I go about getting a receipt from them as this is where it was originally bought from, and they've said we need the manual as it has a code on it that they can look up? No idea, but that's no use to me as I don't have the bloody manual! I suggested the serial number from the TV but she said no, anybody can claim they bought it from here with the serial number!

Now i'm stuck with a 50" plasma lying around the house and I don't know what to do next... I'm stressed out with all the hassle and the misses aint helping when shes moaning at me for chucking out the box! All I want is my TV fixed, don't care about the money!

So if anyone has any advise or a way around this, please let me know I would greatly appreciate it

Thanks
G.

  • I would try Argos Customer Services rather than your local store. I was a retail manager and I know it is possible to find your receipt. It would be very easy if you knew the exact date (and time) of purchase......Store enquiries - 0845 640 3030
  • I'm not quite following the "it was paid for in cash and I threw out the receipts" bit if it was a present.

If you have new for old cover then the insurer should pay for a new one of equivalent specification (these things tend to be replaced in the market place quite quickly) but they are entitled to safeguard themselves against possible fraud.

It is worth hanging onto receipts for that reason but is another reason (apart from protection under the Consumer Credit Act) to pay by credit card if you are disciplined enough to pay it off straight away because somebody then has a record.

What I meant was, i've threw out the box along with the manual.

The person who bought it cant find the receipt.

So what you're saying is I still have a chance of them replacing the tv even though I cant get a receipt ?

50 inch plasma 3D TV,cant see Argos selling many of them, surely they would be able to check their inventory to see how many were sold in June and work from there to get the model number etc.

did the person who bought it take out any extra cover? im sure they would have offered it when something this expensive would have been sold.
  • I really don't understand why they are asking for a receipt if you still have the broken TV; it's not as if you're claiming for something stolen. Have they explained why they need the receipt?

They said it's due to the model of the TV as it was only released in June this year. They said surely we could go back to the company who sold it and get a receipt.
