  • You make arrangements with them to repay what you fraudulently claimed. HMRC prefer civil recovery to criminal prosecution but for that time period and amount it is more likely to go to court. Arrange to commence repaying the amount which can be used in mitigation to show you have been repaying without this needing to be enforced.

  • Tax Credits in their current form began in 2003, yes. But prior to that there was working families tax credits, so its perfectly possible this person is genuine. Lets hope so. Its nice when fraudsters are caught.
  • You have to face this head on. Did you know you were fraudulently claiming?

    Please do not kill yourself.

John , what you have done by comitting this long term fraud is wrong...very very wrong but is it really worth dying over ?

Think about it , if you carry out the threat to kill yourself then it is your poor family who are left behind to cope with the pain !

Hopefully this post is not a wind up as if it is then you are very twisted to post such a thing !

Work with HMRC to arrange a payment plan and tell them the truth from now on . Get everything out in the open and it will be easier for everyone in the long run.
The loopy one has gone :j

HMRC isn't going to go for a payment plan for £50k. It'll be court and prison to set an example. Expect to possibly lose stuff you own if they decide it was "paid for by the proceeds of crime".

In short, you need to be finding yourself a damned good solicitor.
