Car written off, no idea what to do.

My beloved focus has just been written off by the repairers/insurance.

no idea what to do. Hastings Direct have been utter . When they came to take my car (yesterday) to the repairers, they left me with a courtesy car for the duration of the repair. now they've rung me this morning and told me its a write off, apparently it would cost £2700 to repair, the car is only worth £1700. and now they want the courtesy car back.

i've no complaints with them wanting it back, their terms and conditions state so (in the event of a loss car must be returned asap). what I am annoyed about is that from tomorrow I will not have a car, my commute to work is a 50 mile round trip, and I cannot work from home. I have no car to go looking for other cars, and cannot afford expensive rental schemes.

In the first stage of the accident I used public transport (2 trains 1 bus) and it was costing me £10 / day, which is too much cost for me.

I have no idea what to do.

When i last had a crash and had a write off, Direct Line were kind enough to provide me with a courtesy car for 7-10 days while I found another car.

I would want to keep the courtesy car until I was paid.

So would I but what counts is what the policy terms & conditions say.

Just a shot in the dark but it might pay you to have a read of

    http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/technical_notes/motor-valuation.html#9

it covers everything you need on valuations in the unlikely event of your insurance company offering an unreasonably low pay out

    .

Eh? Doing a 50 mile commute in a petrol car will cost you £10/day.

it was a diesel and motorway literally from where i live to a couple of miles short of work.
£35 would last me at least 8 days worth of travel.

as it happens, i still havent heard from hastings. body shop informed them it was a write off before friday dinnertime. i've not heard anything from the insurers.

thanks for the link viao, i'll got a postal address for complaints too for hastings, i'll be writing to both them and the FSA i think.
  • Claim on your guarenteed replacement car policy which normally covers upto 3 or 5 days after the cheque arrives. Oh wait you didnt pay for that?
A guarenteed hire car is an added extra that if you needed you should have paid for.

A courtesy car is just that a courtesy and not a right.
