Hi there, can someone please tell me the cheapest way to ring USA, either from a landline or mobile.
I have looked at the info Martin has provided, but I cant make head or tail of it, so can some nice person take pity on me and give me some info.
I think there are compaines where you pay through paypal and you get a cheaper rate, but who they are, or if there is any cheaper ways I hope someone can tell me.
many thanks in advance.:D

Do you mean calling a US mobile, a UK mobile roaming in the US, or a US landline? No free lunch, and no free laptop

I have a friend who uses the PC, not sure what program but they arrange a time and they both go online and chat.0

Probably not much help but calls to the USA are bundled (free) if you have o2s home phone, other than that the cheapest place I have found is like Stompa says 18185.com:A:A:A:A:A:A0

Some VoIP options for calling the USA:
£2.50 / month (10,000 minutes fair usage): http://www.cheapvoip.com/en/subscription_rates.html
Make a topup and get 200 minutes per week for 120 days free: http://www.nonoh.net/en/free.html
Both of these services can be used in the following ways:- From a landline or mobile phone by dialling an access number (which is a UK landline number)
- From a computer, using a microphone or headset
- Phone-to-phone: using a computer, you enter both your own number and the destination number; the system calls you and when you pick up it calls the destination number. You pay for both legs of the call.
- Using a SIP telephone (telephone that connects directly to the Internet without requiring a computer)
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
In the case of 'a landline' it depends on which company that landline is provided by and what calls plan (if any) you're on.Hi there, can someone please tell me the cheapest way to ring USA, either from a landline or mobile.
Similalry, in the case of a mobile, it depends which provider you're with and, you guessed it, which tariff you're on.
So, who's your landline provider etc. and who's your mobile provider?
For example, if you have a BT residential landline, you could call the USA for ½p/minute using one of the 0844 gateway providers shown on the MSE International CallChecker.
However, if you have a Virgin Media landline, that same call would cost you 6 times that (3p/minute) to dial.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Hi,
The easiest ones are the ones you don't have to register with I use 08442009595 (around 0.5 - 1p / min)
You just dial the number and follow the instructions.
Cheapest would be Skype - both need to register (and both need webcam/ microphones) https://www.skype.com
Then just set a time and talk for as long as you want for free.
I have property/ friends and family in the US so I am in regular contact.
Good luck.0 -
Thankyou to everyone who took the time to reply

But I found a site, and its paypal, where you put X amount in, and they give you a pin number, and for £5 which is the amount I put in you get something like 500 mins.
Honestly, I was on the fone for over 90 mins, and when I checked my balance I still had £4.02 left, can you believe that!!!!
Again thanks to everyone.

Sure I believe that! I (and many forum members) have been making cheap internationals calls like these for ages.
In fact your deal comes out to 1p per min. 18185 would have cost you 0.5 p per min and there are also many 0844 access numbers which allow calling USA for 0.5 p per min though with a connection fee of 10p. Using these, your 90 min call would have cost around 50-55p. Can you believe that!
