Dream Jobs

How the hell do people get into these type of jobs?

I want to be a counsellor, but this is only because it's becoming my only option with me passing the age of 19 and not having my A levels still. Every year I got closer to becoming a counsellor the government or whoever put the requirements higher, it was diploma when I started, then a degree and now you need a masters, it's all part time so I can't even get the grants to help me, so I got on job seekers and thought as many people do... I'll wait until I'm secure and go back to university when I've saved (possible when I'm married with kids?).

I'm now on employment support because the stress of life and more so has made me very ill (anxiety and agarophobia).

I was watching the TV the other day and say, it's me or the dog... I thought I'd love to train dogs like that, but how the hell did she even get that far? I've never seen a dog training degree? I walk dogs for chairty (The cinnamon trust) and I train them myself on this, to stop before crossing a road, but I don't confess to know anything at all...

So who out there has a job in mind but can't see any sort of road to even get there?

My 3 dream jobs are
Psycho Sexual Therapist - Counselling then specialist in relationships.
Librarian - Degree, just heard government is shutting librarys!
Dog Trainer or Zoo keeper - no way I can get into those now.

I'll still aim for the top 2 no matter what altho I looked into the police but don't think I'm fit enough yet. <3

  • You are probably going to have to do a standard job like the rest of us. But I guess you need to sort out your stress first.

There are always roads to get there - if you want to be a librarian you need to get really good at researching things so researching your dream jobs would be a good start. Public libraries might be closing (in some places) but there are zillion other libraries, in colleges, charities, government bodies such as civil service, lots in private organisations such as law firms etc. and more and more and more. Also with librarianship skills you can do masses of other jobs such as information officers, various IT things and well, the world's your oyster. Have a read through CILIP's website (www.cilip.org.uk) for more info. Why don't you apply to your local library to volunteer? I do that now. It will work wonders for your stress levels, will get you out meeting people and give you a flavour of the varied world of libraries and information. By the way, I qualified by going back to university when my children were at school, first full time then continued part time while working. Check the training section of the Cilip website to find out more.

There are also professional bodies for counselling and probably dog training too, do some research to really find out if this is what you want.

    Good luck

  • Do you want to be an actual Librarian or work in a library? I know it sounds stupid but alot of people mix the jobs up.
I work as a library assistant and even though the govt are cutting back it is still possible to get a job and you don't need a degree for it. Alot of public libraries (in our area anyway) don't have a librarian on the books any more and rely on the assistants to do the job.
  • If you are worried about cost of getting qualifications, perhaps you could consider an apprenticeship, or ask an established dog trainer if they could use an assistant?

As a librarian, I would rethink the librarianship option! The master's degree is expensive and there are no jobs. Plus it can be a pretty stressful job (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4605476.stm). The pay is pretty bad, but you are expected to provide a fantastic service on no money, be an expert on everything, run endless training courses/promotions and deal with very stressful customers indeed. If it's your dream that's fine, but the public libraries, school libraries and academic libraries are all getting rid of librarians where I live.

You sound like you don't really know what to do and the stress issues obviously don't help. If I were you I would just concentrate on just getting a job and learning how to deal with the everyday stresses that come with it. You can then think about what you want and maybe do some training at the same time. I have been selling craft items for a while and am currently considering going part-time so that I can devote more time to it. If it works I will consider becoming full-time self-employed or I may stick with just doing half and half etc. I can try it out without ending up destitute basically! You don't have to jump in with both feet which doesn't strike me as being a good idea when you are unsure what you want and having problems.
  • If I read your post right, you are 19? If so you still have so much time to get into these fields. Try out as assistants to those jobs, you can then learn as you go and also find out how to do the actual job you want.

I want to be a Forensic Scientist. Its my dream job! But at 26, a single mother still living with my own mother and stupid amount of debt I dont see it happening, plus I have no A-Levels or a degree!!

Stick with it if its what you really want to do :-)

The people I know who are in their "dream jobs" are very focused and have worked very hard to get there. The three jobs you have listed are all in very different fields and it seems you don't really know which one you REALLY want to do. Decide which one it is and focus all of your efforts on that.

Well to be a Zoo Keeper is pretty easy to get into. My cousin currently works for our Local Safari Park. She simply applied for a job on the front desk taking payments and then casually shadowed one of the keepers there. From there, she learned the way of the Jedi so to speak, and is now a keeper in the infamous Monkey Area of the Safari Park.

Seriously, good luck. But if you are 19, you have it all to look forward to and so much time to do it. :)

Where in the country are you? Chester uni do a course in animal/zoo management, a diploma with reasonable entry requirements and there are links with Chester Zoo and the RSPCA.

At 19, there is no reason why you couldn't apply for something like that, you're young enough to pack up and head off to uni in a different part of the country. Its not too late to apply for 2011 entry before the fees go up and your experience walking dogs may be useful.

  • At 19, you really have your whole life ahead of you.:j Choose what you want to do, and then just go for it! Do whatever it takes to get qualified or whatever, then chase your dream. You are only here once, so make the most of it!
I am actually doing my dream job right now, but the pay is pretty poor. That said, I absolutely love it! I am also the happiest person I know, so I consider myself to be truly blessed.
