Am I due rent for electricity substation on my land??

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but I'm going to give it a go!! I have an electricity substation on my land and I'm wondering whether I could claim rent for it. Does anyone know how to go about this and who to contact?? I've sent an email to the National Grid but have had no reply as yet. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Many thanks

  • yes you could prob claim some money. Find who owns it and call them

That's interesting as we have a sub station in our back side garden, we bought the property brand new and have never received any rent or payment, only thing the electric board have done is put some guttering up after we complained rain was dripping down onto our raised patio area. Would be interested to know if we can claim anything for it.
  • Depends on the land i think.. Find who it belongs to then call and ask. Its not a massive amount but every little helps

The Electricity Board might own the land it is sitting on
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Its quite unlikely but not impossible that the owner of the transformer/pole might owe you a ground rent. Usually they reach an agreement with the original landowner at the time of installation, it might be that they paid a one of lifetime fee in which case they will have permission in perpituity for free.
Theres usually some form of lease /consent lurking in the house/land paperwork, they usually have access rights to come and carry out maintenance. No harm in trying though most electricity installations will belong to the local distribution company rather than national grid so you maybe asking the wrong company, have a look at any signs attached to the equipment, it usually carries a company name

If the house is a new build then chances are the electricy company owns the land it's on or rents it from the developer who owns the land.

I'm going to dig out our paperwork and have a look, dh does not think we will get anything he said we would have been told by the solicitors who dealt with the house when we got it, but I'm going to double check and see.
  • Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. I am still trying to find out who owns the equipment. If I get anywhere I'll put up the details here. Many thanks to all for your suggestions:beer:

I had a pole in the garden of my last house and I got a wayleave payment. The payment didn`t arrive for a few years and I forgot about it. When I realised I asked re back-claiming and was told that the time period had elapsed. So the moral, OP is to get your skates on
