Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM QUICK SCAN then click SCAN

Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin)

Seconded! I'm doing the same thing to the brother in law's laptop at the moment. Even if there's no obvious sign of an infection, it's worth doing every so often just to be sure

Malwarebytes won't download ,I have subscribed to filhippo, what next?

There is no requirement to 'subscribe': filehippo is a free download site. Try this link:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
If it won't download, then download it on another PC, copy to a USB flash drive and install from that.

Thanks everyone for your replies, turned out it was all down to my IS-BT who have been updating their systems.All is okay now but at least I installed Malwarebytes for next time I need it!

I would use Malwarebytes now renegade and not leave it for next time.
Before running a Malwarebytes scan make sure you update it first, if Malwarebytes finds anything after scanning remove anything it finds and post the log file.

ok so it is gone hoorah! Now the kids can devastate my PC again. Have the log so now what do I do and how do I find out if people have actually used the info on my computer. And no! I did't pay any money over the phone - I may have been stupid enough to fall for it but not so stupid as to pay for something I am not sure about(although yes I might be paying for it as we speak). I cannot believe I fell for it in the first place but you live and learn.

You still need to run HJT and post the log from that as well, as previously advised by RIK.
