Title should have read RADIO.....not daio....sorry

Can anyone advise what the ballpark consumption of mb traffic for an internet/wi-fi radio use in 24hrs continuous (Listening to Absolute-Radio) and a little bit of light internet cruising, not downloading for maybe 2hrs?
Reason I ask is that where I am (abroad) the provider seem to think that in the space of this time I have used 1GB pulling this through a dingle key plugged via a wi-fi router. I don't think any of the neighbours had hooked in to it either.

I have asked for a traffic print-out but need the passport of the dingle-key holder, who is out of town.

    BBC is launching an HD radio stream at 320kB/sec, compared to standard 128kB/sec.

    Assuming the standard bitrate, a daily usage would seem to be;

    128k * 60 * 60 * 24 = 11,059,200kB

    = 10,800 Mb

    = 10.54 Gb per day, 0.44Gb per hour......

    Open to correction if anyone disagrees...

    Different bitrate on other stations will give different results of course.

    Turning it on its head, if you want to use less than 1Gb per day, then

    1Gb = 1024Mb /24 = 42.67 Mb per hour

    42.67 Mb = 43,691Kb /60 = 728Kb per minute, 12Kb per sec

    You need to be listening to a station with a feed of 12Kb per sec or less.

    From Absolute's website (my bold highlights). They must be using different arithmetic to me; 20k (per sec) = 1,728,800k per 24 hrs, = 1,687Mb, doesn't it?

    "My ISP is capping my usage. Can I still listen?

    Here's the maths. Our standard Windows Media streams are just 20k - so, if you listen non-stop for 24 hours, you'll shift a total of 210 meg: easily within the 1 gig limit that one UK ISP has put in place.
    If you use a higher bitrate, we'll use more bandwidth. A 128k stream uses a bit over 1 gig in 24 hours - not that you'll listen 24 hours a day, of course.
    Most people listen to us online for around six hours a week, so our advice is that it shouldn't make a major difference to the way you use your internet connection - but, if you're worried, you ought to move your ISP to one that doesn't have a usage cap. While we understand ISPs wishing to make a good service for all of their customers, we don't believe usage caps and online radio stations mix well."
  • Thanks for the feed-back. The current provider charges $25 (15.63UKP)per 1 GB. I have always been used to having the radio on in the background, hence why it was on for 24hrs, the previous provider supplied a connection at a fixed rate but their's was a bit hit 'n miss
