Community noticeboard template/script

Options
I have been asked to set up a small website for our community. Initially it will provide news, contact details and community events listings - though this requirement will probably evolve (expand :))

So, I wonder if anyone has set up something similar or can point me in the direction of some good shareware (or not) scripts that might fit the bill.

In your position I'd seriously consider one of the many bulletin board offerings, which you can start out simply, with the Admin as the only user - posting news and events items, but later enabling other functions. That way it could evolve to have other people register and post items themselves as & when you're ready for that.

There are lots of free options - for example if you want to run it yourself there are packages like PunBB, PhBB and plenty of others - or there are hosted alternatives.

    there are endless option

wordpress is pretty good and user friendly

i just made a wordpress site in about 3 hours for my friend whose a magician www.dantrix.co.uk just to show an idea of what can be acheived and im only a very basic user

you could also use something similar to php-nuke this is like a portal with a homepage with information and links but you can integrate a forum into it at a later date its all fairly easy once you get the hang of it

if you get some webhosting from www.orchardhosting.co.uk you get loads of scripts that are all automatically installable for you making it ideal for someone thats not fully 'scriptified'
  • if you want to try any of these out i will happily install them on my server and give you a admin login so you can try them out and get a feel for what they are and how they work

you will see the front end and back end of each software package

I used to tun a couple of forums (fora?) using phpBB but we need something a bit more snazzy with less of a forum feel to it. I might get asked to add one later but we would have to fins somebody with the time to moderate it.

    Hubert -
I looked at Wordpress (their site anyway) and it looks good, as does your "dantrix" site which also I looked at.

I do have programming and database and stuff - I just wonder, I don't want to get too "bogged down" in the design and set up and if I start to mess with code I think that's where I will end up as I wouldn't be able to help myself. Is Wordpress able to get something 'live and kicking' and looking professional for somebody who is new to it. One thing we will do with the site is hopefully get the suppport of local businesses and if i mess it up at the starting post then I don't think the site will be a success. What do you think?
