Regarding the Sky box, what messages does it show on screen?
If you go to Services, System Setup, Signal Test does it show a reasonable signal strength and quality? If not, the dish, cable or box are broken.
You should be able to get all the BBC and ITV channels and hundreds of others without a card. You will need a card for Channel 4 and five but one on which the subscription has expired will do.
You could always buy a 10m extension cable to use until the landlord fixes the socket (which personally I think he should).0
