Operation costs

One of my cats (not the one I discussed rehoming) has been hit by a car tonight and is in the emergency vet hospital. He will need an operation to repair his broken jaw (broken in 3 places). Although he is insured we need to pay the bill upfront and I wondered if anyone could give me a rough idea of the cost. We will find the money as he is too important to lose I just need an idea of what it will be.

Oh no hope he gets better soon!
I've gone through several ops with my cats. I think a standard one with 2 days in cat hospital cost me about £600ish.0 -
It really depends where he has fractured his jaw? It would be totally fine to wait until the morning (keep him comfortable on painkillers overnight, wait for the shock to subside) and then transfer him back to your own vets for the op (will most likely be a LOT cheaper) the next morning. Guessing its his lower jaw (mandible) that he's fractured? Most likely if its fractured in 3 places, he'll need his jaw wired and pinned. They might even keep him in for a few days and tube feed him until he feels up to eating food himself. What OOH provider is the Emergency Vet? Is it a large national chain starting with V and ending in w? If so they are known to be VERY expensive, don't expect to see anything less than £1k at least I would expect
Hard to say without seeing the case but may well be around the £5-700 mark in a normal daytime practice depending on how much aftercare is needed etc etc. Hard to put a number on it really 0 -
Why can't you just ask the vet for an estimate of what the bill will be? All vets I've ever used have done that for us - I've never yet had a vet bill that wasn't estimated for me, within £20-ish."Your life is what your thoughts make it"

Yes - ask the vet for the rough cost.
I do hope the operation goes well xxx0 -
Thank you for all you kind wishes and info. He made it through his operation and is home safe. I had posted late last night before the vets was opened to give me time to organise the money first thing. The emergency vet cost £280 for painkillers and an overnight stay. The x-ray, operation and after care for him today was £250 from our local surgery. Now we just need to get the insurance documents sorted.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

Yay! Sorry, I thought you meant that the emergency vets were going to do the op (hence the BIG estimate!) I think that's very reasonable for everything all in! Glad he's doing well
