tesco charged me 3 times.

i used the pay at pump service at my local tesco petrol station, my debit account then got charged 3 times for the same transaction over the course of three days which then put my account into an unauthorised overdraft. I've been back to the garage and have been given back the money that was taken without my consent for the petrol i'd not had, they seemed to know all about it, they even told me which dates it would have been that i was charged, they also told me that anyone paying by card on the 8th of october will have been charged the same. The problem came when i mentioned bank charges, I was told that under no circumstances would they be paying for them even though its clear on my bank statement that the charges are because of the money they took, I was told to take it up with my bank or to ring head office. I went to my bank who said Tesco are to pay the charges and even though they can see two transactions were made without my consent they can't stop the charges happening. head office were less than helpful and told me i would have to send my bank statement to them to have a look at, surely the local branch should be able to deal with this seeing as it was them that created the problem, head office won't have it sorted before the charges are due to come out of my account on december 1st and in the lead up to christams with two young children to provide for i can't afford to pay £90 for something tesco have done. any help would be appreciated.

How about sending a copy of your bank statement showing the charges to Tesco head office?

They gave you an address did they?
  • Send it to Head Office, the local branches just don't have the facilities or authorisation to make such payments. Do this *now*. As long as you don't delay you will be able to claim any additional charges that may be incurred while they sort it out.
  • You can certainly hold tesco liable for the charges, but I think the bank is also wrong personally. The payments are unauthorised so you can dispute them. This means you should not be liable for the consequential charges.
  • thanks for the advice, i'll get it sent off tomorrow morning and if any more charges are incurred because of how long it takes they can cover them as well.
