NHS Health Payment Exemption Certificate

Hi there,

I recieved one of these in the post today- a little card telling me im entitled to free presecriptions, sight tests and dental treatment etc. But am a bit confused about why i qualifiy so was hoping someone here could help.

I'm a single mum of a young baby, work 3 days a week, earn 21,000 a year and recieve around £200 in WTC and CTC in total per month.

I'm not complaining at all, it was a really nice surprise after a very tough year but just wondered if it was maybe because i was considered low income (which i didnt think i was at all as im very grateful for my blessings)

any insight gratefully accepted.

It is because of your income. if you receive WTC and CTC or the disability premium within WTC and earn under a certain amount, you're entitled to the exemption card.

According to here if your income is more than £15,276 then you can't get a exemption card.

But tax credits work on the previous years income.

So I can only assume the OP had a lot smaller income last years. As on £21K even with one child you would not get WTC.

Could it be due to the age of your baby? We moved to the UK when my youngest, even though born in Canada, I apparently qualified for free dental, prescriptions etc during his first year. Is your child under one year old?

    Thank you for the replies.

Last year i was on materity leave and partly unemployed afterwards but still on more than 15k.

i have declared all of this hence my surprise. My baby is 15 months now, but at the time of applying for WTC and CTC he was under the age of one. they have back dated to the card to the point of my application.

i'd say it was due the age fo the child at the time of application then, because as others have said you simply can't a free prescription card if you earn over a certain amount. Tho you can apply for one and be given a partial help card.
