BT Account opened - not by me!

I received a letter from BT - a start up pack. An engineer's visit was booked, direct debit setup, etc.

Problem is I didn't order anything! They say the order was placed at 0230, bt they have no record of the call handler who took the order.

They have my bank details etc.

Here's the [further] oddity: if it is a con, it has to be the worst one ever: the telephone number isn't mine (same village), but the address is mine, and the equipment was set to be delivered to me.

I suggested it was a glitch on their system, as I used to be a customer; they say they "NEVER" keep bank details. However, I refer them to my point about "if it's a con - it gains the perpetrator nothing" - while some people might know my bank details, certainly no one in the village does. Has anyone else had experience of this anomaly?

  • Anyone you have ever given the sort code and account number of your bank account to, can set up direct debits on that bank account.

So it might be someone playing a game.

And it might be a BT mess-up.

I'd email BT to confirm the call (I originally wrote cancellation, but it isn't a cancellation so don't use that word!) and get a reply.

I would also watch your online banking very carefully and make sure a direct debit mandate for BT isn't set up. All they need is your s/c and a/n to set it up, and they have those (apparently) so they can set it up, they are supposed to have your permission, but there's nothing to prevent the mandate going ahead and getting set up, and money debited.

Hmmm - We left BT back in May to go to O2. Account closed down seemingly OK with letter from BT. They even correctly cancelled the DD.

Except tonight whilst checking my Online Bank Account I find that the BT DD mandate has been reinstated within the past week  No money taken yet so I have instructed the bank to cancel it from my end.

Is someone in the BT accounts department trying a bit of slamming I wonder using account details they SHOULD have deleted but never quite got around to doing......
