First DLA claim.

Options
Hi you all seem to be the people in the know.

My son has recently got a DX of High Functioning Autism, and i was told i by a friend i should claim DLA, i never actually realised it is probably something i could have claimed many years ago.

Anyway i posted my claim form back to Birmingham on 3rd Nov, and haven't heard anything yet. Is this normal? Do you think i should give them a call to check they recieved it? or am i just being a little bit too hasty?

Sorry for all the questions but this is all completetly new to me.

Thanks.

Give them a quick a ring to check they've received the form. It'll put your mind at rest :)

    Number is: 08457 123456 open 7:30-6:30 mon-fri

It's supposed to take ~40 working days to assess a claim but really depends on the situation. Mine took over two months because they wrote to my specialists for reports but the payments did get backdated to the date I requested the application form.

You should get a letter soon telling you that they've received it.

DLA claims can take a long while to sort out. When renewing the send the forms out 6 months before the end date so everything can be done in time!

New claims can be as little as a week, but most I've heard of - including my 7 renewals (18 years claiming) seem to take around 6 weeks from sending the form to having a decision.

I would ring them as you should have had a courtesy letter from them by now saying they have your claim and are looking at it.
  • Thanks for all your advice.

I gave them a call today amd they recieved the form on the 4th of Nov, and it is now in the queue waiting for the decision makers to look at it.
