:DLooked at money supermarket .com site to compare prices of my gas and electricity i gave the required information to them and looked at quite a lot of comparisons. At no time did i give my details to E.ON. E.ON phoned me today they had my name and details. The salesman hung up on my wife when she told them we had only been on the comparison site. Was considering E.ON as a provider will think again now.

Did you put your details into the comparison site? They need to use these details to see what is available in your area.
How else do you expect the companies to know what tarriffs to offer you without knowing your household details.
It's the same as when you use the comparison sites for car or house insurance, you get spam emails from all the companies for ages afterwards.
It's only a game

Never put your real email address or phone number into a comparison site.
You have to give your real address as MrsBartolozzi says so they can work out tariff.0 -

Oh dear, now you've come here and given MSE your email address too "Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
all comparing sites (ie websites like money supermarket, go compare etc) are simply data collection sites that use your details to sell on to other companies - this is why they are free. To avoid receiving unsolicitored mail, email and telephone calls there should be a box you can tick to say you don't want to receive any updates or promotions or your data being used by 3rd parties. Failing that you can join TPS (telephone preference service) and MPS (mail preference service) and once you are a member it becomes against the law for anyone to phone or mail you.
I used to work in direct marketing and make a point of opting out'of any further correspondance otherwise you'll be getting 15 companies a day calling you and your email box will be full of !ffers' from other companies.
I hope this helps.0 -

Some, but not all...
There are a few comparison sites that dont require you to put any personal information in to get a comparison, I always use Energyhelpline as that only asks for your postcode so they know what region you are in to give you the correct prices.Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0 -
USwitch works with only your post code - you don't have to enter email addy or phone number to get comparisons.0
